Bangalore September 13, 2024: A 50-year-old male patient presented with achalasia, a neurological disorder affecting the oesophagus. Achalasia is characterized by the inability of the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES) to relax, leading to difficulty swallowing, regurgitation of food, weight loss, and potentially chronic cough.

The patient successfully underwent a Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) procedure to treat achalasia at Aster CMI Hospital Bangalore. This technologically advanced minimally invasive technique offers a promising solution for this rare neurological disorder. It is a rare condition that affects approximately 8 people per 100,000.Through this procedure, the patient can swallow function through specialized techniques.

Traditional surgical interventions for achalasia often involve open surgery, which can be invasive and have a longer recovery period.

Dr. Naresh Bhat, Chief of Gastroenterology at Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, said, “This procedure offers a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery and has revolutionized the treatment of achalasia. The procedure involved creating a controlled small tunnel in the oesophageal wall and then carefully closing the opening.and dividing the lower oesophageal sphincter, allowing for improved relaxation and easier swallowing.

The procedure was successful in improving the patient's swallowing function and alleviating symptoms of achalasia. This innovative technique offers hope to patients with achalasia who may have previously faced limited treatment options.”

“With the help of skilled doctors and high-end technologies available at the hospital, we successfully performed the surgery.  We are glad to offer this advanced procedure for our patients with a cutting-edge solution for achalasia. said Mr. SGS Lakshmanan, COO, of Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.
