As we all know, art is a rich and multifaceted phenomenon that extends far beyond mere earthly aesthetics, encompassing emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and cultural dimensions, moreover it is a manifestation of human creativity and innovation, pushing boundaries and challenging conventions, providing a platform for self-expression, and allowing artists whole over the world to convey their unique perspectives and experiences. Therefore, many neophyte and veteran artists dream to get such platforms where they can showcase their flairs for hues to the folks around the globe and get anticipated acknowledgment.

In that direction, the growing global recognition of Indian art, at global platforms is a thing of pride for all Indian artists, highlighting the country’s rich cultural heritage. To add to the glory, renowned Indian Artist Ashok Kumar held his first solo exhibition, titled at the prestigious Kim Bo Seong Art Center in Seoul, South Korea in July month. The exhibition featured 18 remarkable paintings that delve into themes surrounding the human experience, spirituality, and the unconscious mind, each rendered in acrylic on canvas. This initiative marks a significant milestone, as Ashok Kumar becomes the first Indian artist to achieve such an honor in a museum of this caliber in South Korea.

The theme represented a deep exploration of inner self and the nuances of human emotions. The Kim Bo Seong Art Center, recognizing Kumar's extraordinary talent, allowed him the freedom to choose the style and number of works for the exhibition. Each painting embodies a psychological journey, inviting viewers to confront their inner landscapes.

The invitational exhibition has been meticulously curated. The museum team collaborated closely with Kumar to decide on a theme that encompasses the intricate interplay of psychology, spirituality, and human aesthetics. The paintings in the exhibition not only showcase Kumar’s artistic prowess but also delve into the essence of the human soul, inviting the audience into a realm of inner exploration.

Kumar's journey to this exhibition has been both challenging and rewarding. In an exclusive conversation with him, he shared insights into how he secured this opportunity. “It has taken years of dedication, participation in international art fairs, and continual evolution of my style,” he explained. “I connect deeply with audiences, and I believe it was this connection that caught the attention of the museum.” His commitment to exploring the depths of human emotions and aesthetics has garnered attention from various galleries, culminating in this significant showcase.

When asked about his feelings regarding this monumental exhibition, Kumar expressed a mix of excitement and gratitude. “It’s overwhelming yet exhilarating. I am thrilled to share my work with an audience that appreciates the depth and complexity of art,” he shared, reflecting on the importance of this event for his career and for Indian art on a global platform. "I have always believed in the power of art to connect cultures and convey universal messages," he expressed.

Feeling a mix of excitement and humility, Kumar stated, "It's an honor to be recognized on such a renowned platform. This exhibition is not just for me; it’s for all the artists who dare to dream." His enthusiasm radiates through his work, which is characterized by bold colors, symbolic elements, and a unique blend of Eastern and Western artistic influences.

The artist’s eye is always human centered. Every composition, color, symbolism is towards the inner landscape of man. This is a rare trend in the art world of small art, and therefore Kumar's conversations have timeless resonance. Unlike cold concept art where emotions are bound, his work provides human warmth and complete immersion.

“I try to highlight the connection between spirituality and psychology in my work,” Kumar articulated. His paintings feature recurring motifs, such as female figures signifying the archetype “Anima” from Carl Jung's analytical psychology, plant life symbolizing vitality and healing, and celestial forms such as crescent moons suggesting the cyclical nature of life. Because of this, the audience can relate to the work on the basis of non-verbal senses. The harmony of ethereal colors that fill the screen hints at a psychological past state or a 'trans' experience, which coincides precisely with the title of this exhibition, which is a mental axis that covers the entire artist's work. We come face to face with our inner self before his work. Whether the confrontation is uncomfortable or comforting, it is the most essential power of art.

This exhibition by Ashok Kumar is not just an exhibition to see but an exhibition to experience, providing the audience with a gap of emotion and reason beyond perspective. This exhibition, which allows you to experience human truth and spiritual reason, which is rare in contemporary art, is an aesthetic conversation that penetrates East and West, and a conversational meditation that heals contemporary alienation.

Moreover, I would love to share the artistic journey of Ashok Kumar that began at the College of Art in Patna’ India, where he graduated with distinction in 1987. His quest for artistic mastery soon took him to France, where he secured a scholarship to study at the “L’Ecole Superieure des Beaux-Arts de Marseille” in 1990. In 2015-16, he received a senior fellowship in painting from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, further solidifying his place in the international art arena.

Kumar's works are a vibrant medley of symbolisms and narratives that speak to the human experience and our intrinsic connection to nature. With a career spanning over three decades, he has showcased his art in various prestigious exhibitions globally, resonating deeply with audiences in countries like France, Peru, China, and Chile.

Kumar's work has not only captivated local audiences but has also carved a niche for him on the global art scene. His pieces have been showcased in numerous international exhibitions and art fairs, leaving a lasting impact on art lovers across the globe. Notably, his art was featured on the prestigious ARTSY PAGE by ACS Gallery in Chicago in 2017.

Kumar’s unique ability to bridge the cultural divide between the East and West, while communicating universal themes of human emotion, has created an invaluable dialogue within the art community. His artworks are part of various museum collections throughout Europe, Asia, and private collections in India.

Kumar elaborated on his artistic vision, stating, “My creation explores new visions through the imagination of human beings, connecting with our cultural diversity. I aim to create a sense of ecstasy and peace through my art, exploring the interplay between humanity and nature.” These elements resonate deeply with audiences, creating an emotional tapestry that transcends language.

When asked about his message to the upcoming generation of artists, Kumar emphasized the importance of authenticity and introspection. “Create from your truth. There is immense power in vulnerability and honesty in art. Don't shy away from exploring your inner self,” he advised. His testament resonates through his narratives, which often invite the viewers to embark on an introspective journey.

Ashok Kumar's exhibition at the Kim Bo Seong Art Center promises not just to be a visual feast, but an immersive experience that pushes the boundaries of contemporary art. As observers step into his world of enchantment of within, they will certainly find an opportunity to engage with their own subconscious, making this exhibition not just a showcase, but a profound encounter with the essence of human reality.

His exhibition is a testament to Kumar's unique sculptural language, which combines traditional Indian mythological symbolism with Western bodyism and expressionist dialogues. The theme related to inner fascination is not just an exhibition title but a mental axis that covers the entire artist's work, inviting viewers to experience human truth and spiritual reason. His work, which is repeated as the main motif, is more than just a portrait painting, is interpreted as 'inner self-portrait' and 'psychological portrait'. The screen that has removed specific time and place is the mirror of the space of the unconscious, the human existence painted by the artist.

Aesthetically, Ashok Kumar's passion for art is full of expressionism and abstractism, but refuses to be compromised by any party. This can be seen as a result of his embodiment of both the spirituality of Indian art and the structural experimental spirit of European art. Although the influences of Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall, Kumar's distinctive flatness, repetition and rhythm, and consistent meditation on facial expressions lead to his own unique sculptural language. He pushes the genre boundaries and attempts a fusion between conversation and meditation, psychology and religious innermostness.

In light of his significant contributions to the global art scene, Kumar's story serves as an inspiration for many. His narrative exemplifies the power of art as a universal language that transcends borders and invites all to explore the depths of their own inner ecstasy.

To notify those who are interested in art, I would like to share that his second personal exhibition entitled “Ecstasy Within” is going to start from August 1 for 25 days at Yukyung Art Museum, Geoje Island, South Korea.  There are many more on the way including his third one at Haegeumgang Theme Museum, and I wish him good luck for all the upcoming accomplishments!
